The team had 4 members including myself, the team consisted of a Brazilian Marcos, Venezuela Halley, and Shizuka from Japan. The main purpose of this assignment is to discuss the role of innovations in bringing about change in business processes and lead to overall development of the business if the change suits the business environment. We had to prepare a Pecha Kucha presentation on different types of changes occurring in a business and why the individuals resist to changes occurring in the business. This presentation is then to be submitted to our class instructor. A Pecha Kucha presentation contains 20 slides which are of the duration of 20 seconds each. I was chosen as the team leader of this team by my friends and thus I assigned different areas of the project to each person. I decided that I would be the one presenting the Pecha Kucha Presentation for my team in front of instructor. The presentation was segregated in parts which was then distributed among the team members so that every person can research on the part given and contribute to the preparation of the project. My part of work was to integrate the different areas prepared by my team members and present them in a presentation. I also will be discussing the presentation with all its areas of discussions. I was given the responsibility to ensure that the presentation clearly shows instances where individuals and even organisations have tried to resist and even revolt against major changes which can affect them. The major challenges which I faced as leader were communication problems, tactical decisions making, proper coordination among members (Odumeru and Ogbonna 2013). The most problematic situation which I faced was conveying to my team members what exactly I wanted in the presentation and how I wanted things to be done. Some of my team mates would do things a bit differently which did not impress me and thus there were often times when we were in disagreement. Another thing which I had to sort out was allocation of different areas to different team mates. In most cases when I allocated a particular area to a member, he/ she agreed to do that part but occasionally members disagreed and wanted to do their own area as per their own convenience. Then there was the issue of coordination which I can accept was due to the fact that it was the first time we were operating as a team. I was given the responsibility to present the presentation by a group vote. A part of the team collected the data and the integration of such data in a single presentation was another part of the teams work under my supervision. The different models of management are important factors which is responsible for changes (Baden-Fuller and Haefliger 2013. In this fast changing environment small and medium scale businesses have significant level of impact on the overall market. Studies show that such businesses are developing due to better implementation of strategies and proper strategic management. Studies also suggest that better performance of the business is closely related with the leadership style and team dynamics of the business. Effective leaders can accurately forecast the future and plan accordingly, developing and implementing strategies which will be be neficial for the business (Aziz et al. 2013). Such leader can implement changes in the business and effectively motivate the employees of the business to ensure that their is no resistance to changes. As per Behavioural theory, there are specific behaviour traits which are present in a leader which can lead to the overall success of the business. In such a leadership style the leaders may adopt an authoritarian approach or laissez-farie approaches. Recent studies show that behavioural style often is proven successful in different conditions and produce desired results as well. I prefer more of a democratic approach in the group as it gives other members of the group a power to put out their opinions and suggestions (Yukl 2013). Another key theory which was developed due to the limitations of the Behavioural theory of leadership is known as Charismatic Theory of Leadership. This theory states that a leader can make other persons work efficiently not by authority but by the virtue of the personality of the leader. This theory states that if a persons personality is charismatic and appealing then individuals will naturally follow such a leader. I think this can be developed by any leader including me with some experience (Avolio and Yammarino 2013). Another important theory of leadership and which I personally prefer and follow is the Transformational leadership theory. It states that the leaders can inspire the members working under him by his visions, perceptions and beliefs. This theory recognizes that a leader will be able to motivate any individual and inspire them to put in more effort and in this way, improve that persons performance (Northouse 2015). I prefer this and I have followed this in my group as a leader and inspire team member and keep them motivated. This has direct impact on the team dynamics and team climate. As per studies there are three types of leadership which are transactional, transformational and passive-avoidant leadership. Leadership requirements in educational institutions have also increased. Strategic leadership in any team of educationalist takes eminent role in forecasting plans which the institutes will try to achieve in the years to come. Moreover in secondary schools students are being divided in a team to learn about team dynamics and how to get the job done in cohesive way (Barnett and McCormick 2012). Team Functioning and Conflict Management The only requirements which I think is that the team needs to be motivated and have good team dynamics with a purpose or thirst of achieving its goals. However I did identify certain area where our team work can be made more effective in future. The thing which I noticed was that I had included certain theories in the presentations which were in paragraph format was actually difficult to project to my team mates. I could feel that there was a lapse in their attention when I was explaining these theories. I figured that maybe this was because of too much theory content in the presentation and I decided to incorporate more graphical data, charts and drawings which will not only make the presentation interesting but also convey the data which I want to present in the right sense. These were the communication area where every member takes active part in the discussion process. Secondly I think a system of feedback needs to be established so that even if I as a team leader makes a mistake I can correct myself if my team mates gives me feedbacks. Lastly I think the team dynamics can improve and every member need to be involved in the discussion process actively. While doing this project with my team I realised how a work can be done effectively in a team while ensuring deadline and quality of work. I recognized that in a group a person needs to perform as per the requirements and plan of the group and the work is segregated. My professors used to tell me that strength lies in unity and not in individualism, and now I totally agree with them. I believe an individual can perform exceptionally well in a team which has good team dynamics and is motivated. The problems that we faced in the decision making for various area can be overcome by the voting system which we implemented at the later stages of the group discussions in order to avoid disagreements. Furthermore with better coordination which I believe will come with time we as team will be able perform better. I follow transformational style of leadership which focuses on motivating the team members. I have tried motivating them with the belief that we will achieve good marks and also work efficiently as a team in any future assignments. The planning function of management is the process of setting goals within the corporation that are expected to be achieved over a set period. Therefore, Boeing got to be the world’s leading aerospace company by setting such goals. The Boeing Corporation has engineer departments, sales departments, mechanical departments, and product testing departments among a few others. Each individual department will have set goals put in place by corporate and guidelines regarding how they should achieve the desired goal for each project. Each goal is designed for each department to become the most efficient in their levels. There are six steps in management planning. Step four in management planning is the selecting of goals believed to be most appropriate and feasible by the managers. Step five implements the goals and plans into action by managers. Step six is essential in making sure goals and plans are met. If the goals and plans are not monitored and controlled managers would not know if they were ever met successfully. The corporation has to pay special attention to detail when it concerns obeying the laws and regulations in regard the manufacturing of aircraft. The planes must be tested for safety and flying ability before they ever hit the mainstream public. Notices on the aircraft tell passengers when they should be buckled and when it is considered safe to unbuckle. Engineers have to provide manuals for the aircrafts in case any issues may arise when in use. Ethical issues come into play when Boeing makes bids to other corporations like the military or NASA. They are not allowed to charge prices that people believe to be unfair or make any changes after things have already been agreed upon. This means that the sales department has to plan how much they want to sell their product for. The main corporate social responsibility that Boeing has is safety. They have to engineer items safe for the public to be on/use. With Boeing being the world’s leading Aerospace Corporation, millions of people rely on the use of their products. That means that engineers have to know the latest safety information and managers have to make sure that they put the safety information to use. Strategic planning is used by the Boeing Corporation when making new aircraft and other items. They have to figure out how to market their item just right so that buyers will be interested in it. This planning has led Boeing to make planes more efficient and comfortable for passengers to ride on. Tactical planning is organized for competition, such as Airbus and demand for product. Boeing is a competitor of Airbus, which is another aerospace engineering corporation. Boeing has to be aware of competitor’s new products and when they will be released. This means that they have to formulate and release products either better or more efficient than the competition’s. Operational planning identifies the specific procedures and processes required at the lower-levels within an organization (Thomas S. Bateman, Scott A. Snell,  2009). So within the Boeing Corporation this would be those who deal with the delivery schedules and human resources departments. Every plane that takes off or leaves an airport has to be scheduled and the arrival/departure times displayed so that the public is aware. Human resources is responsible for the hiring/firing of Boeing’s many employees and any issues consumers may have with a product or service. If someone believes that they did not have a good experience in the flight he or she would call the resource department, and the department would most likely do everything in his or her power to make the person feel better. Contingency plans are put in place in case of any challenges that may arise when making their products. A good example of Boeing’s contingency plan is in 2008 they were trying to produce 40 aircraft a year but the United States hit an economic crisis. This meant that Boeing had to cut back their number of aircraft being created so they did not feel the effects of the economic crisis. So Boeing did not become the world’s leading aerospace corporation by doing nothing. It took hard work, planning, and management. These word-pictures were not mere illustrations of an object or a concept. Just the opposite, his work was intended to gently destabilize our mental habits of representation. Examination is a very wide word, which is used in all spheres of life. It is the most feared word of many students. We have examinations everywhere around the world. In Singapore, students take examinations every few months and major examinations every few years. As a result, many parents often push their children to strive in examinations. This causes them to feel extremely pressured as they have to juggle extra co-curricular activities that are compulsory in Singapore’s education system as well as to ensure that they do not neglect their studies and to meet their parents’ expectations. They often end up burning the midnight oil when there are examinations, leaving them worn out. Hence, the majority of students in Singapore feel that exams should be abolished. However, examinations are also proven to be beneficial. They help observe if we were able to consolidate what we have learnt and it has given students the drive to study. Without examinations, do you think a stud ent will spend time revising? Clearly, examinations should not be abolished. Examinations have given students the drive to study. As many parents expect their children to pass with flying colours during examinations, they usually will push them to study, hoping that by doing so they will get good grades. Sending them to tuition classes or even taking time off work to help them with their studies are ways parents will push them to work hard. As many parents always tell their children, â€Å"getting good grades will get you a good job†. By doing so, students will have to put in effort into their studies and do frequent revision which helps them to understand better. Should examinations be abolished, students will not be motivated to study and do revision. Without revision, there is no point in having classes as one will not learn and remember everything being taught. Students will then laze around and waste unnecessary time which could have been used for revision which will be beneficial to them. Not only do examinations give students the drive to study, they are also used to evaluate students. It is important for schools to evaluate how well students can consolidate the material presented to them, as otherwise the teachers might have explained everything in class in vain. The evaluation based on the grades taken in exams can help the teachers see what the students’ mistakes are and what misconceptions they may have and the teacher can correct them. Moreover, it helps them to see the students’ areas of  strengths and weaknesses and ensure that the teacher is able to maintain their strengths and improve their weaknesses. Hence, students will be able to learn better and it is no doubt that examinations are helping the students. Some people point out that examinations cause a large amount of stress to many students. Admittedly, students tend to feel extremely pressured when they hear the word â€Å"examinations†. This is because they are being pressured to meet their parents’ expectations by studying extremely hard, and sometimes, even burning the midnight oil. While doing so, they also have to attend extra co-curricular activities as well as to attend ballet classes, piano classes, tuition classes, and many more. However, if students learn to manage their time properly, I do not see why they should feel stressed. By completing their homework and revision on time and by drawing out timetables, there should not be a problem when it comes to dealing with examinations. Moreover, instead of doing last-minute revision, they could have done revision every day after school. This way, they will not panic. Furthermore, if students do not waste unnecessary time lazing around and playing video games, ther e should not be a problem with not completing their revision on time. Additionally, stress helps boost brain power as well as create mental toughness, increase clarity, and it helps in greater appreciation for one’s circumstances, and contribute to a sense of confidence built on a history of overcoming of obstacles. Hence, when it comes to examinations as a whole, the good outweighs the bad. All in all, examinations have been beneficial to many people.

History of Lauropian Society

Secluded in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, is a place called Lauropia, a wonderful society. It is always peaceful and nothing bad ever happens on the island. The island's air is always fresh and free of any toxins or pollution. Temperature on the South side of Lauropia is always warm with no humidity present. On the North side of Lauropia the weather is always perfect for winter activities, the temperature is just cold enough for the snow to fall. The North side of the island is full of steep, snow-covered mountains that are perfect for skiing. On the South side of the Lauropia clean, sandy beaches cover the land. The ocean water is crystal clear and warm. Lauropia is the perfect place to live. On the island every person would be treated as an equal. No one person would think or act like they were better than someone else. There would be no racism present, all types of people would reside here and get along together. It wouldn't matter if you were African American, Caucasian, Asian, Spanish, Mexican or any other race each and every individual would treat each other the same. Whether a person was heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual wouldn't matter. Lauropians wouldn't judge each other by their appearance or whom they interacted with. There would be a diverse amount of different religions that would not criticize the other religions for their beliefs. Once a month all the different religions would get together at the island community building and congregate together to discuss their viewpoints and thoughts on each faith. The Lauropians would be involved in a wide variety of sports and leisure activities all year long. This would be made possible because of the extreme temperature differences on the North and South sides of the mountain. The North side would always be cold so the citizen could go skiing and snowboarding at the Lauropian Mountain Resort. The resort would offer a wide variety of different leveled slopes for the skiers on one half of the mountain. On the other half of the mountain there would be a Snowboard Park consisting of a slopes and half pipes strictly for the snowboarders. A snow tubing park would also be available for any whom has interest in snow tubing. There would family tubes and single tubes available for use. For all the snow mobilers on Lauropia, The Lauropian Mobile Park will be open for their riding enjoyment. All these activities and more on North Lauropia will have minimal charges to take advantage of the facilities. On the warm and sunny South Lauropia, the beaches will be clean and free of charge for all citizens. The beaches would have volleyball courts open to anyone. At the piers there would be docks where people could rent Jet Ski's, Speed Boats, Yachts, and Party Boats for their recreational pleasure. Sidewalks and paths would be on hand for Lauropians to roller blade, skateboard, ride bikes, and run, jog, or walk. Boating trips would also be available that take groups out in the middle of the ocean to scuba dive and snorkel. Throughout the whole island shopping centers, eateries, and sports complexes of all types will be accessible. Any store imaginable would exist for the Lauropians to shop for their wants and needs. The women would be in shopping heaven with the amount and variety of stores available to them. The amounts of places to eat would be incredible. They would range from places like Burger King and McDonalds, to Chi Chi's and Lone Star, to five star restaurants. Any type of food that a person had a craving for would be accessible. Sports Complexes would be placed all over the island for Lauropians to participate in any athletic event that they enjoyed. There would be football, baseball, field hockey, softball, soccer, and lacrosse fields. Indoor and outdoor courts for tennis players would be accessible. If there were any sports that a person or group of people would want to play and the facilities were not available the Lauropian Sports Board would do their best to make them available. The Lauropian Society would always try to make the island enjoyable for each person. Schooling would be one of the most important aspects of life on the island. It will be required for all citizens to start their education at elementary school level and continue up to collegiate level. It would not be required, but if the parents wanted to start sending their children to nursery or preschool the facilities would be open for use free of charge. All schooling on the island would be free of charge because education is of great importance to the people of Lauropia. The schools would administer the best education possible. There would be a large variety colleges available for students to choose from depending on their individual or dual major. If a person decided that they did not want to finish their schooling, being banished from the island would punish them. When and if the person decides they want to come back to island to finish their education the school board will have a meeting and decide if that certain person deserves to be let back on the island. On most occasions the student will be allowed to come back. Once a person graduates from college and gets a job, if they decide they want to go back to college to further their education, the company that they work for will usually give them funding for it. Students will be required to go to school for nine months out of the year. Altogether students would be required to attend seventeen years of schooling. In order to insure that the students would be getting an excellent education the teachers would have to take a Teaching Exam every five years. If the teachers fail to complete the requirements and the written section of the test they will not be permitted to teach for one year. After the period of time is up the teacher may retake the test and if he or she passes it, they will then be allowed to teach again. Teachers would also be required to go back to college annually and take two courses to broaden their knowledge. All measures would be taken that would be necessary to maintain the finest quality of education for Lauropians. The citizens of Lauropia would be able to make up their own laws and rules. Each year the members the government would sit down and revise the laws from the years before if necessary. Each community on Lauropia would have representatives that would go around and take ideas and thoughts on how the island could be changed and run to make it better place to live. Laws would never be passed if a large number of people on the island disagreed with them. The main concern that the government would have is the Lauropians happiness.

The Use of Death In Beowulf essays In the story of Beowolf, the three main themes of fate, courage, and death stick out. Death mostly sticks out towards the end of the story in the chapter about Beowolfs death after his fight with the dragon, but also sticks out in other parts of the story. You could say death was the whole reason that most of the story happened. It all started back when Abel was killed by Cain. Cains offspring together produced a slime from which Grendel was born. Since Grendel was naturally evil, he killed nearly 30 men at the beginning of the story just because he enjoyed eating them. Grendels murdering went on for years to come until Beowolf heard of it. Beowolf made the journey to the kingdom and took on Grendel in the first big fight of the story, which ended up in the monsters demise. Grendels Mother then heard of her sons death resulting in her being bent on revenge. She tried to take on Beowolf herself, but she ended up dying at his hands also. In the final few chapters of the story, Beowolf dies after his battle with the dragon. As he is dying, he makes a long speech about his life and tells Wiglaf, the only soldier to fight beside him, how he wants to be buried, and what to do with the treasure. After he dies, Wiglaf talks to the other soldiers on how they were cowards, and left Beowolfs side to hide in the forest. In order for the criminal justice administration to use good ethics and professional behavior they need to think critically. Law enforcement, courts, and corrections rely on critical thinking to make good decisions. Law enforcement must use critical thinking to determine if a law has been broken, how to respond, and when to make an arrest (Ozyasar, n.d.). When law enforcement thinks critically this will bring out good ethics and professional behavior. When law enforcement does not first think critic ally they respond to quickly without first thinking about ethics and acting in a professional manner and may arrest the wrong person and let the real criminal go. The courts also rely on critical thinking to oversee legal proceedings and determine a final decision on a case (Ozyasar, n.d.). Prosecution and defense attorneys as well rely on critical thinking in preparing and arguing for or against the accused party (ozyasar, n.d.). Without critical thinking the courts may have a difficult time determining if the accused in fact really committed the crime. The court system administration takes in a lot of information and must first think critically before making a decision. Critical thinking must come first in order for the court system to act ethically and in a professional manner. Corrections and parole officers rely on critical thinking to evaluate the progress of individuals, sponsor reductions in sentences and maintain order within prison facilities (Ozyasar, n.d.). Corrections a nd parole officers are faced with dangerous situations many times and need to think critically in order to deal with the situation ethically and professionally. Criminal justice administration individuals all have their own ethics and behavior. Although sometimes everyone has different ethics they must set aside their beliefs and make the right decision regardless of their feelings in the situation. Good ethical and professional behavior is important in criminal justice administration and in order for this to happen critical thinking is needed. Law enforcement is faced with ethical dilemmas every day and it is important that they handles these situations by first thinking critically so that they can do their job ethically and professionally. I feel that law enforcement needs ethical training because they deal with so many different situations and how they react to these situations need to be done ethically and with professional behavior. Ethics training for law enforcement helps them to readily recognize an ethical problem or dilemma, identify various options to address the particular issue involved, make a rational and ethically sound choice of which option to choose, take prompt action based upon that choice, and accept responsibility for the outcome (Gleason, 2006). The seminar would stress some particular areas of ethical conduct that I feel are important. The first area of ethical conduct would be law enforcement using their authority ethically and professionally. I choose this particular area because it is very common for police officers to take their authority to extreme. Certain situations can cause law enforcement to act without thinking and they throw their ethics and professional behavior to the side. Training law enforcement to control their authority will help them uphold a good reputation for themselves as well as the agency and give the community faith in the officer and to not be afraid of that officer or any officer in the agency. Another area of ethical behavior that would be stressed is law enforcement performing their duties without the influence of a person’s sex or color. Regardless of a criminal’s race or sex law enforcement should treat them as they would anyone else. In certain situations a police officer needs to put their opinion aside and treat the person ethically and in a professional manner. Training the officer in this area will help them treat everyone equally and the community will feel like they have an unbiased law enforcement agency. Another area of ethics would be law enforcement should treat their fellow employees and the community with respect. Law enforcement should act ethically towards everyone and uphold professional behavior at all times. Training officers to do this helps them to be a role model for their agency as well as the community. Another area of ethical behavior I feel that needs to be stressed in the seminar would be that under any circumstances should law en forcement except gifts or bribes from anyone in the community or in the agency. It would be unethical and unprofessional for any police officer. In the seminar I would also stressed the importance of honesty by law enforcement. Honesty would consist of withholding evidence would be immoral and unprofessional. Our communities need to feel that they can trust our law enforcement and feel safe. Law enforcement effectiveness depends upon community respect and confidence (FDLE, n.d.). Therefore law enforcement must be proficient in ethical conduct and be professional at all times. Police officers are held to a higher standard of behavior by society, because they are stewards of the public trust and are empowered to apply force and remove constitutional privileges when lawfully justified. They take an oath of office, are expected to comply with professional code of ethics, and are subject to various laws, rules, and regulations (Gleason, 2006). Therefore I feel that my proposal for ethics training for law enforcement is necessary because of the expectations and requirements that law enforcement has to uphold professional behavior a nd code of ethics. In order for our criminal justice administration to function properly a clear understanding of ethics and professional behavior is needed. In Regeneration Pat Barker utilises the character of Burns as a way of presenting the extent to which the society have managed to damage the young soldiers. Burns is a fictional character used as an extreme case in Craiglockhart Hospital that presents the emotional destruction that all soldiers feel and further enhances the strain from society on Burns individually shown in the actions he uses to demonstrate a severe deterioration.It is clear that the war is continuously playing on the mind of Burns in this extract by the militaristic imagery he uses when describing, what to other members of society, would be simply a normal walk around. On the bus journey first of all he describes the rattle of branches on the bus windows as sounding like ‘machine-gun fire’, which depicts the constant reminder he faces of the front line. The reaction of Burns trying not to be caught ‘crying out’ having heard these sounds suggests just how stressful being reminded of war in any way can be.Throughout this extract Burns also shows the discontent he feels and the struggle he faces to do the simplest of tasks such as walking up a hill. Barker refers to Burns’ struggle as ‘climbing the hill between trees’. The clever use of ‘climbing’ suggests the physical struggle he faces but also draws parallel with the feeling of climbing in and out of trenches on the western front that he formally faced, therefore hints at the idea that being reintegrated into British society was as much a â€Å"war† as it was when fighting on the western front.Again Pat Barker manages to show Burns facing the mirrored difficulties of war when he is ‘slipping and stumbling’ in ‘his mud-encumbered boots’ just like if he was in the harsh conditions of war. However we know that actually the ‘ploughed field’ he was walking through was nowhere near as difficult to travel through as in the western front which high lights how he has got far worse since returning which could possibly be due to the added pressure of society that he has been unable to adapt to life back home.Another key indicator that displays the pressure that has affected the character of Burns is the physical strains he faces. He depicts the discomfort with human contact so he ‘tensed, not liking the contact’ which indicates the disconnection he feels from society. Barker also further illustrates the dissatisfaction with life in general with his very pessimistic reflection on the day at the beginning. Looking at his room window he envisaged a ‘blurred landscape’ and the ‘sky and hills’ dissolved ‘together in a wash of grey’.The ‘grey’ and ‘blurred’ landscape that would have realistically have held much greater detail in rural Scotland- where Craiglockhart was located- shows the insignificance of the surrounding world for these struggling soldiers. Th ese dull adjectives simply underline the feeling of being fed up that Burn would have felt having being withdrawn from war and now has understood that he no longer has much meaning in life due to the societal pressure forced upon him.The feeling of being fed up that Burns portrays is seen through his dislike for spending time with others in the ‘common room’. He describes the talk as ‘facetious tones’ describing how he does not care what people have to say as it does not wish to spend time socialising with others due to the domino effect that he feels alienated from society. The men appear to sit around the ‘common room’ and talk about ‘the war, the war, the war’ showing how annoyed he is that this is all people talk about.The repetition of ‘the’ shows that this was the single most important thing of the time and this has left Burns feeling annoyed that he would rather just disconnect himself from everyone instead of f eel pigeonholed to only talk about such a distressful topic. As Billy Prior mentions later on in the novel this club ‘will be the club to end all clubs’ whereas Burns clearly does not comply with this. Physical strain on him. Education in Barbados Essay

Barbados had one of the oldest and most advanced education systems in the Eastern Caribbean in the late 1980s. Education dated back to 1686, when private funds were used to build the first school. Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, education was controlled by the Anglicans, who were later joined by other religious groups. By 1962 education was free for all nationals and administered primarily by the state. This trend continued, so that by 1984 only 4 percent of the primary and secondary schools were managed by churches. Barbados’ longstanding emphasis on education was evident in the values and goals of contemporary society. Education has traditionally been associated with success and upward mobility. In 1970 Barbados officially claimed to have achieved a 99-percent literacy rate, a figure that was questioned by some observers. Despite these doubts, observers generally agreed that in the 1980s literacy in Barbados exceeded the rates of other Caribbean societies. In 1984 Barbados had 126 primary schools, 110 of which were administered by the state. Approximately 1,350 teachers were available to instruct the 35,000 students. There were sixty-four secondary schools, five of which prepared students for technical careers. A total of 6,000 students attended secondary-school programs. Postsecondary education consisted of seven institutions that awarded degrees or certificates. Four schools offered specific vocational training: the Barbados Institute of Management and Productivity, the Erdiston Teacher’s Training College, the Tercentenary School of Nursing, and the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytecnic. Academic programs at the university level were conducted at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) and the Barbados Community College, which offered vocational and technical classes as well. The UWI also included Codrington College, a local theological seminary. In 1979 the government created the Skills Training Programme to augment existing education programs. It was designed to fulfill the need for short but intensive training in vocational subjects and to prepare students for careers in mechanics, electronics, horticulture, masonry, plumbing, and other technical and vocational occupations. Although the educational infrastructure was designed to meet both the nation’s academic and vocational needs, observers seriously questioned Barbados’ ability to provide quality instruction in fields related to tourism,  agriculture, and manufacturing, the major economic undertakings in the 1980s. Few courses were actually offered in agricultural science and commerce; as a result, an inadequate number of Barbadians were being prepared to take on the responsibilities inherent in a growing economy. The education system was also criticized for being stratified along socioeconomic lines. In general, upper-class Barbadians prepared for university studies at the best primary and secondary schools, received a disproportionate number of scholarships, and had the best records for entering the professional disciplines. On balance, however, most Barbadians felt that the education system still afforded opportunities to achieve at least limited upward mobility. The government appeared to be attempting to address specific criticisms of its educational policy; its goals for Barbadian education in the 1980s included the promotion of equal educational opportunity and enhanced technical and vocational programs in all schools. In spite of its shortcomings, the Barbadian education system remained the best in the Eastern Caribbean in the 1980s.
